The Abi Medaka Rice Fish can bring a little underwater magic to your aquarium with an iridescent, silvery‑blue sheen that looks downright ethereal under good lighting. While this species leans towards the smaller size compared to other ricefish, they still make a visual impact. They float like tiny ghosts amongst lush aquarium plants and also shine in pond‑style setups and outdoor tubs where their shimmering topsides are a joy to admire from above.

Behavior

  • These fish are exceptionally hardy, beginner-friendly, and adaptable to a wide variety of aquarium parameters, including brackish water setups.
  • In a standard home aquarium, these active fish are primarily mid- to top-level swimmers.
  • They are a deeply peaceful species that should be housed alongside other gentle nano fish and larger peaceful invertebrates.
  • They do best in schools of 6 or more and will display their best color and behavior when kept in appropriate numbers.
  • This species has the potential to jump, so a well-fitting lid or dense floating live aquarium plants are highly recommended for coverage.

Diet

Feeding Rice Fish is simple. They are omnivores with a healthy appetite and will eagerly eat a wide variety of fish food. To maintain their health, provide a balanced diet of high-quality flakes and micro pellets. They will also readily accept live or frozen foods, such as baby brine shrimp or daphnia, which mimic their natural diet and support optimal energy levels. Feed them small amounts once or twice daily.
